Job Description
Librarians perform a variety of tasks, including:
Organizing materials
Librarians create and use databases to organize library materials, such as books, videos, and other resources, so they are easy to find. They also weed out old resources.
Researching
Librarians research new books and materials by reading reviews, publishers' announcements, and catalogs.
Providing information
Librarians provide information, reference, and readers' advisory services to patrons. They also help patrons conduct research and evaluate search results.
Promoting the library
Librarians promote the library and its resources through displays, talks, and community events. They may also use social media to promote library activities.
Managing staff
Librarians may train and supervise library technicians, assistants, and other support staff. They may also manage budgets and statistical returns.
Using technology
Librarians use IT systems to catalog, classify, and index stock. They may also research computers and other equipment for purchase.
