• An Architect is a professional who transforms building designs into reality, ensuring functionality, safety, and creative vision. Collaborating with engineers, they develop concepts for structures that meet project goals and operational standards, bringing architectural projects to life

Roles and Responsibilities

Architects are tasked with a variety of responsibilities that span the duration of any construction project. Key duties include:

• Developing initial project design concepts and presenting these to clients.
• Preparing and adjusting architectural drawings using computer-aided design (CAD) software.
• Coordinating with engineers, contractors, and other professionals to ensure design feasibility.
• Applying for planning permissions and advising clients on the statutory approvals required for projects.
• Overseeing the construction process to ensure adherence to the architectural plans.
• Conducting site visits and project meetings to monitor progress and compliance with design specifications.
• Modifying designs based on client feedback, site conditions, and other influencing factor

Technical drawing

Technical drawing skills are critical for a drafter, as they enable the creation of detailed and accurate plans and drawings. Proficiency in drafting tools and computer-aided design (CAD) software, alongside a thorough knowledge of scales, symbols and the technical language used in drafting, are all essential. Without these skills, it may be difficult to produce accurate designs that meet the needs of clients and colleagues.

Drafting software

Proficiency with drafting software is crucial, enabling quick and efficient creation of detailed and accurate designs. Using software comfortably is vital for creating complex designs and plans. Without this skill, keeping up with the job's demands and meeting project deadlines may be challenging. Examples of popular software tools include:

• Cedreo: a 3D architecture and home design platform made for architects, home builders and designers
• SketchUp: a 3D CAD platform used for architectural drawings, interior design projects, animations and landscape design

Communication

Strong communication skills are important as they enable clear and effective communication with others, including architects, engineers and construction workers. A drafter communicates technical information, so being able to do so clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, is an aspect of good communication skills. Understanding the requirements of clients and colleagues is also a vital element of communication.
