WHAT’S IN A NAME In April of 1917, a young lawyer and activist named Mohandas Gandhi arrived in the Champaran district of Bihar, India. The place had been utterly unfamiliar to him until he was urged to come to the aid of desperate peasant indigo farmers suffering unconscionable exploitation and oppression at the hands of their planter landlords and imperial government. Gandhi would ultimately spend a year in Champaran, working tirelessly alongside those indigo farmers to mobilize for political and economic justice. It was in Champaran that Gandhi developed his strategy of organized civil disobedience, a practice that became not only the foundation of his efforts in the fight for Indian independence, but the hallmark of subsequent successful non-violent civil rights struggles around the world. Indigo Global takes both our name and our philosophy from Gandhi’s Champaran movement.
