APEEJAY SURRENDRA GROUPD
Established in 1910 with its foundation in steel, the Apeejay Surrendra Group employs over 43000 people in rapidly expanding operations in Tea, Shipping, Hospitality, Retail, Real Estate, Financial Services, Shipyards, Logistics & Knowledge Parks.
The 1960s saw the Group venture into hotels, real estate, construction and pharmaceuticals. By November 1967, the first of our hotels had opened for business in fashionable Park Street in Calcutta. Apeejay Surrendra expanded its operations to Tea in the 1980s with the acquisition of tea estates in Assam, North East India. Within less than a decade, the tea enterprise had created new jobs, better pay and more facilities for its workers, and the greater exports and higher tax revenues substantially contributed to the economy of the state of Assam.
The Group continues to grow with new initiatives and consolidation of existing businesses. In 2005, the group acquired Typhoo, UKs third largest and an over 100-year-old iconic British tea brand. This was Indias second largest global FMCG acquisition and the 7th biggest corporate takeover by an Indian company till October 05.
The Family values that have nurtured the Group continue to guide the conglomerate as it expands its footprint with new business ventures. Young professionals committed to long-term progress and profits invigorate operations with a new vitality.
The Groups vision is to be Indias largest and most profitable privately owned family business.
2010 was the Groups centenary year.
